ISTANBUL

HOME

Istanbul is a very modern city situated partly in Europe and partly in Asia.  With a population of around 12 million, it is the most densely populated urban centre in Turkey.

The city's name was officially changed from Constantinople to Istanbul in 1930; until A.D. 330 it was known as Byzantium.

The main tourist attractions are located on the European side of the city.  Most residents live on the Asian side and work on the European side. There are only two bridges that connect both sides of the city.

There are so many things to see and do in Istanbul, I've split them up into the following topics...

Cityscapes

Ancient sites

Palaces

Gardens

Mosques & churches

Museums & galleries

Bazaars & shopping

Outdoor activities

Cultural activities

Dining

Accommodation

The city

The main district of what was once Constantinople is now called Sultan Ahmet.

Taksim is the main commercial centre of Istanbul. This city is so large that it has many other commercial centres as well.

Both Sultan Ahmet and Taksim are on the European side.
